Matthew Broderick is currently in preview at the Great White Way's Cort Theatre in Sylvia as new dog owner Greg. The two-time Tony winner has a long connection with the A.R. Gurney play; his wife, Sarah Jessica Parker, originated the role of the titular canine off-Broadway back in 1995. Is it true that she based her character on her then boyfriend Broderick's dog? "That is correct, Sally," he recently confirmed to Broadway.com.
Has Broderick been running lines at home to get prepared for this incarnation of the show, which stars Tony winner Annaleigh Ashford as the titular canine? "Yes… a little bit. I feel odd running it with Sarah because she’s done the professional version…so I feel intimidated!"
We sense Broderick's infamously dry wit talking! As well as winning Tonys for his performances in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and Brighton Beach Memoirs, he was nominated for The Producers and his film credits of course include Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Lion King and Godzilla.
Directed by Daniel Sullivan, Sylvia also stars Tony winner Julie White and Robert Sella, and will officially open on October 27.
